30 Days of Hunger Games

LA LA LA. So I did consider doing 30 Days of Angel just to complete the trifecta of primary Whedon shows (Dollhouse, what Dollhouse?), but then I took one look at the questions and realised it would be a waste of time because I disliked that show so much I'd just be pissing off everyone who did like it, lol (Example: Day 26 - something that you wish had never happened: THIS ENTIRE FREAKING SUCKY SHOW. Day 27 - something that you wish had happened: A SHOW FEATURING CORDELIA, DOYLE, FAITH AND OZ INSTEAD.)

So instead I'm going with something I did enjoy:

Day 1: Your favourite character
Peeta. Honestly, this character is a mystery. He is so lovable and charming and noble-spirited-yet-utterly-pragmatic and wryly humorous and emotionally aware and supportive that he should be annoying and Gary Stu-ish to the max. Instead, he's layered and real and lovely. HOW?

Day 2: Your least favourite character
Huh. I'm not sure I actually have a least favourite. All these characters are in some way awesome and/or necessary.

Day 3: A character you hate that everyone loves
I don't hate any characters though I do hate these questions. I don't know what "everyone" else loves. I wasn't that interested in Gale because he came across as a somewhat standard, slightly dull hero type to me and didn't get enough depth (and I don't entirely understand the massive hype about him, apart from Liam Hemsworth being pretty); but I certainly don't hate or even dislike him.

Day 4: A character you love that everyone hates
I don't believe there's anyone everyone hates! Who does everyone hate?? Don't say one of the Careers. My heart will actually break. THEY ARE CHILDREN/TEENS FACED WITH IMPOSSIBLE CHOICES. (Don't say Snow or Coin either. They both rock their respective layers of evil!)

Day 5: Your favourite fight/battle scene
Considering what a very good job both the books and the movie have done highlighting the needless atrocity of the violence-as-entertainment factor, that is a spectacularly dumb question, lol.

Day 6: A scene that made you laugh
The one in Catching Fire where Johanna strips off her ridic tree costume and makes casual naked chit-chat in the elevator while Katniss is all silently prim and outraged <3333333

Day 7: A scene that made you cry
1) Rue's death 2) The bit in Mockingjay where Katniss blurts out random things for Peeta to remember about himself and then runs off to her tent before she does something stupid like cry. I had that stupid all covered :CCCCC

Day 8: The character you are most like
Foxface, I guess? Stay in hiding until everybody else has killed each other off is totes what I would do.

Day 9: Your favorite quote
1) "Yes, frosting. The final defense of the dying."
2) "Finnick?" I say. "Maybe some trousers?" #pantslesscomfort #FTW

Day 10: Peeta or Gale
See above. Also allow me to snottily snot that I loathe this question with the fire of a thousand suns. This ain't Twilight.

Day 11: Something you hate about the series
Nothing. Why all the hate-mongering, meme? :CCC

Day 12: A character you wish hadn't died
Finnick. I get why and that no one was safe, but damn. That was rough.

Day 13: A character you wish had died
No one.

Day 14: Your favourite tribute (aside from Peeta/Katniss)
From The Hunger Games, Rue and Thresh. From the movie, Rue (what a perfect young actress!) and Cato (loved that they gave him more depth). From Catching Fire, Johanna Mason. I loved how angry and damaged she was and how it didn't stop her from kicking arse and turning everything that had been done to her into a weapon.

Day 15: Your least favourite tribute (aside from Peeta/Katniss)
I don't have a least favourite. Even the ones who played right into the hands of the system and embraced the killing just made me sad because they were so trapped by their lack of alternatives.

Day 16: A question you wish had been answered in the book
I would've liked to learn more about Peeta's brothers and I thought that the fact that his entire family died in the District 12 bombing got completely glossed over. Apart from one brief question from him about why they hadn't come to see him, I don't even remember there being a single reaction scene (although it's been a while since I read Mockingjay, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

Day 17: The worst death
Finnick's. I do love that this is a story that doesn't cater to happily ever afters and what characters DESERVE, but I so hoped he'd make it. Poor Annie. Cinna's was rough, too. And Prim. And Rue. And goddammit, every death in this story is awful, okay.

Day 18: A song that reminds you of the series
As mentioned in [info]amo_amas_amat's song-hunting post a while ago, Baker Baker by Tori Amos reminds me of Peeta's hijacked era in a way that's downright uncanny.

Day 19: Your favourite pairing
Much as I adore Katniss and Peeta (hahah lookit me being all mainstream), I also have lots of love for Finnick/Annie. If we're talking fanon, I also love the idea of Katniss/Johanna, Haymitch/Peeta, Haymitch/Maysilee, and the tributes are pretty much infinitely shippable in ALL combinations, lol. AS IS CINNA.

Day 20: Your least favourite pairing
Can't say I have one.

Day 21: A pairing you don't get
Again, nothing really comes to mind. I don't find Katniss/Gale very interesting, but I wouldn't say I don't get it.

Day 22: Your favourite book of the three
I don't have one. I read them back to back (like, I'd get up to grab the next book while approaching the end of one, just so I'd have it handy as soon as Suzanne Collins hit me with another evil cliffhanger), so it's pretty much one long story to me.

Day 23: Your favourite secondary character
Annie Cresta. I have a soft spot for crazy chicks.

Day 24: Your least favourite secondary character
Again, I don't think I had one. I fail at disliking anyone in this verse, apparently. Woe.

Day 25: Your dream cast
The Hunger Games hit it pretty perfectly. For Catching Fire, I've already posted about this here.

Day 26: Your favourite scene in The Hunger Games
Pretty much this, both book and movie version. Oh Peeta - how so honest and ruthlessly manipulative at the same time? LOVE.

Day 27: Your favourite scene in Catching Fire
The scene after the announcement of the Third Quarter Quell rule, when Katniss and Haymitch get drunk together and come to their agreement to protect Peeta. It's so glum and resentful and hopeless and they're SO ALIKE and gaaaah. All the feelings.

Day 28: Your favourite scene in Mockingjay
This is where I embrace my status as 1) a masochist because my favourite scene is the one that makes me cry the hardest, and 2) a crazy cat lady: the one where Buttercup shows up demanding to know where Prim is and he and Katniss end up cuddling together in shared grief, no matter how much they disliked each other before. I DON'T CARE HOW RIDICULOUS THIS IS. I LOVE IT, OKAY.

Day 29: Your favourite thing about the entire series
As demonstrated by this meme, I love that this premise and these characters give us no easy solutions and no black and white. Even the Capitol is not evil; it's all made up of individuals and most of them are not bad folks. I love the stark social commentary of the whole thing that never wags a preachy finger in admonishment; just tells a tale that makes us love and fear and loathe and suffer with these characters while making such a strong case for compassion and the human conscience as a guiding force. I love the meta wrapped in meta. It's the best kind of cautionary tales, of mirrors: it doesn't simply spoon-feed you values but it makes you think.

Day 30: A book/series that you would rec to fellow fans
Days of Grass by Tanith Lee; Otherland by Tad Williams.

BONUS: Day 31: Whatever you want
Kind of an addendum to No. 25, but I have SO joined the casting bandwagon for Jesse Williams as Finnick. I will not even argue it. Just freaking look at him.

Comments

You've got me totally sold on Jesse Williams for Finnick. I still think Harry Lloyd would do a fine job, but this guy would be amazing!

And I'll be heartbroken if they cast some weird third party that we haven't vetted. Not Allowed.

The way these memes focus on "what makes me a Special Snowflake" is really getting to me. And all the hate. Glad you're not playing their silly reindeer games.

Day 6: A scene that made you laugh
The one in Catching Fire where Johanna strips off her ridic tree costume and makes casual naked chit-chat in the elevator while Katniss is all silently prim and outraged <3333333

LOL I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT THAT SCENE! With Johanna being all girltalk about fashion and Katniss being all suspicious and distrustful, and Peeta just giggling... So good!!

Day 9: Your favorite quote
I love yours! I'd also add "We miss you Effie!" (although maybe that scene would be my answer to #6). There is a distinct lack of Effie love in this meme, I see...

Day 12: A character you wish hadn't died
Finnick. I get why and that no one was safe, but damn. That was rough.

Word word wordy word. I'd say Cinna as well. Those two really got to me.

Day 16: A question you wish had been answered in the book
I would've liked to learn more about Peeta's brothers and I thought that the fact that his entire family died in the District 12 bombing got completely glossed over.

Oh good answer. I don't recall them ever going into that either. Most of my questions would just have to do with the society - I want to know everything about Panem!

YES THIS. They are SO alike and I love how that makes them butt heads to much, and how his path is the road that she could easily have gone down if the Quell hadn't come along and she was having to mentor doomed kids year after year after year. Peeta was the only hope for both of them, but they didn't have to like it.

Hmmmm interesting recs. Days of Grass sounds especially appealing, I'll have to check the library for it!

And in conclusion (*waves banner*) WE LOVE YOU, EFFIE!
Hahahahah, I freely admit that I left out Effie just to make you do the meme. COME ON, LIL. EFFIE NEEDS A CHAMPION.

his path is the road that she could easily have gone down if the Quell hadn't come along and she was having to mentor doomed kids year after year after year.

THIS. THIS THIS THIS. And she couldn't have survived it any better than he did, and if she *had* followed the Capitol's pressure and married Peeta for PR reasons (as she would've had to because there WAS no way out) it would have killed any chance this relationship ever had and damaged them both beyond repair and gaaah this makes me feel so bad for Haymitch and yet incredibly respectful because he managed to compartmentalise/detach enough to not completely break. For 25 fucking years!

Days of Grass is the book that started me off on my love for cranky-yet-competent, somewhat sullen and utterly non-romantic kick-ass main female characters. The Katniss parallels are very interesting and the society - though dystopian- is very different and interesting in its own right. Plus, stand-alone novel! No one seems to do those anymore, lol.

And I'll be heartbroken if they cast some weird third party that we haven't vetted. Not Allowed.

YES. I demand that any top choices get run by us first. We have ultimate power, Y/Y? YouTube commenters said so, it must be true.
That was a very interesting and enjoyable read - as were your Buffy and Firefly memes, btw, damn how you made me crave rewatches -, especially as I've heard and read so much rubbish about the books and the films in the media recently.

Anyway, I'm really sort of torn about Gale. On the one hand I agree about him maybe not being the most interesting character - especially in the movie, he comes across a lot more layered in the books – on the other hand, after reading the epilogue of “Mockingjay” one of my first thoughts was “and what became of Gale?” That has probably to do with the fact that he was one of the first characters that I was introduced to in the Panem universe, that he was Katniss' ally in her pre- games world and the only one left that knew her well before she stepped into the limelight of the arena, so the way he disappeared from the picture left me a bit unsatisfied.

Reason why a sequel that told us about how Gale fared in his life after the separation from Katniss would be very much appreciated by me.

In the same way, I'm highly undecided about the most awful death. But in the end it would be Prim's for me, I think. Finnick's was terribly devastating too, of course, but it didn't come that unexpected for me, to be honest. The way I saw it, he had tragic hero written all over him from the moment we found out about his backstory, so I had the tissues ready to shed tears over him from quite early on.

I hated Cinna's death, thinking “oh no, that can't be”, because there were so many blanks to fill, so much I still wanted to know about his life, his past, his story.

Rue's death was even more heartbreaking in the film, than it was in book, agreed, although I wouldn't have thought that such a thing was possible at all.

But the death that got to me most of all was Prim's. Even with the abundance of senseless waste of young lives, Prim dying really had a shock effect on me. I didn't see that coming at all. Especially as saving her life was the one and only reason for Katniss becoming a tribute and going through all the horrors. So much sadness and futility!

Finally on the Katniss/Buttercup scene: Nothing ridiculous about that. That to me was a very poignant portrayal of how grieving people behave and cope. I remember the time of my life very clearly when I wanted to spend the rest of my days drinking cheap beer from the bottle with my deceased boyfriend's best mate, who I had always though of as a big mouthed macho moron. And he felt the same way, although to him I had been a stuck up, pseudo-intellectual, elitist bitch most of the time.
So, yes, although the scene might appear cheesy on first sight, to me it was one of the most realistic descriptions of grief management ever.

Ok, end of ramble, just one more thing: who do we have to bribe/blackmail/kill/sleep with to make you casting director of “Catching Fire”?
I've been holding off commenting on this because of how I feel bad about disagreeing with #1 and so keep stopping reading on. And then I remembered that I only disagree with the film version of Peeta not the book version which, WORD, basically. I'm sorry not to have succumbed to Josh Hutcherson as Peeta (sorry for me that is), his depth just didn't translate across for me apart from a couple of moments, mostly just the one when he asks for Katniss's bow. Loved that humour in him coming out.

Lol, you equating yourself to Foxface. Trollolloll. You know you would have Peeta pegged and not eat the berries so quickly though. Aldi for the win.

I so agree about Peeta's family. I get that the book is Katniss centric but really - she didn't spare one thought to the rest of his family? She's so poor family biased! Gale's siblings get all the love! Maybe she has some skewed, "if you didn't have to provide for them you didn't really love them" thing going?

Cinna and Finnick deaths were brutal. Especially Cinna for me - there just wasn't enough of him at all! He's sooooo interesting, and it's super interesting how Katniss differentiates him from all the other people manipulating her when over and over he puts her out there according to his own agenda that she has no control over however much it may potentially be benefiting her. I think at the beginning she has no choice but to trust him and she likes him and she just never questions that so we miss out on looking at why he did what he did.

Love you Tori Amosing the whole series! It works so well. Recently I've also been loving Matthew Goode's While we were hunting rabbits as an over all song for THG.

All your choices for favourite scenes are awesome. Even Mockingjay, lol.
Did you ever get your hands on the soundtrack? If not, let me know and I will email you the mp3s in a zip file (which you will delete after the proper amount of time and then go acquire the songs legally, I am quite sure). It is perfect and fab and so many of the songs capture the mood of the story better than I could have ever imagined.
Oh yes, I did get it! It's really beautiful, I love the song selection. Totally great mood capture.
