Stuff Wot I Did On My Hols (Part 1) - The Doctor And I

So I recently took time off from work. I realise normal people do this all the time, but I don't. Or if I do, it's for necessary reasons, like being sick or urgently having to go somewhere or attend something, etc. etc.

This was not that kind of Taking Off Time From Work. This was for purely selfish reasons, just so I could go to Wellington lots and sleep in and bum around and read books and watch telly for three weeks. You guys, it was glorious. I never wanted it to end. (Why are there no rich patrons anymore? Why will no one pay me to sit on my arse all day and drink wine while I watch ALL the shows? Honestly, careers are so overrated.)

I did mean to do updates about what I got up to, but I think I'm gonna split it into parts because I have trouble with conciseness. Hence, Part 1: telly!

Near the top on my agenda was catching up with Doctor Who before the new series started. And I did, oh did I ever. I'd watched the first three seasons of the reboot years ago and did enjoy them but never reached the point of addiction. There were two reasons for this: 1) Rose. 2) Martha. I loved both Eccleston and Tennant, but the ditzyness of the companions, combined with the ham-fisted NO NO, SHE IS SPECIAL AND YOU MUST LOVE HER vibes, soured the whole experience for me. I got through the Rose seasons because people were all nodding compassionately and agreeing Rose was made of fail but that Martha was so much better so just to stick it out - but then I got to Martha and uhm... well, let's just say I have a hard time deciding which of the two annoys me more, lol. (Usually whichever one is currently on screen, which made those eps when BOTH of them were around pretty much torture *shudders*).

Long story short, I stopped watching after the end of season 3. Which, as it turns out, was precisely the point where I could have finally got addicted had I just hung around for one more single solitary episode, lol. Timing's a bitch. I did watch a handful of random later eps here and there and did realise that the Eleventh Doctor rocked, that Amy Pond was a far cry from her predecessors, and that I wanted to roll around in River Song's hair. But for the longest time it was that show that I would eventually get round to catching up on, provided I had nothing better to do.

Sometimes I fail phenomenally at judgement, lol.

I started marathoning a few weeks ago, and what can I say, it was love. Violent, painful, cracky, glorious love, from minute one of season 4. DONNA. ALL THE FEELINGS. THE LIBRARY EPS. THE OOD. WILFRED. THAT FUCKING THING WHERE EVERY SINGLE EPISODE BROKE MY HEART AND PUT IT BACK TOGETHER. EXCEPT AT THE END, THEY SKIPPED THE PUTTING BACK TOGETHER PART ALTOGETHER. ARRRRGH.

I can not words, people.

And then season five and six followed with a daze of feels and awesome. I loved Donna so violently that I was mildly worried about Amy initially, except then along she comes and there are moments where she is legit my favourite. And Rory. Rory Rory Rory HE IS THE PERFECT PERSON. I've not cried and laughed so much and so wholeheartedly at a show in what feels like a very long time.

AND of course, there's the woman I want to be when I grow up:

Guh. Guh guh guh. I honestly had my doubts that they'd manage to pull off all the epic stuff they set up with River Song's story, but it very, very quickly turned out I could take those doubts and shove them, because ow. My heart. Such gorgeous storytelling. So much timey-wimey brilliance. ALL THE PAIN.

Also, River Song gives my other favourite space chick named River a run for her money.

Mind you, no one can ever quite supplant River Tam in my affections (her mix of psycho, adorbs and heartbreak remains legendary) but man, even the fact that there can be legit competition was fabulous and unexpected.

[Sidebar: We live in sad times where apparently no fanvid can get by without heaps of dialogue, text, and talking heads. And where a Jedward song is among one of the saner choices. I can't even.

Still, Cool Space Chicks Named River:

(srsly, just go with the Jedward. Believe me, I waded through three dozen that were worse.)

I'll be running out of hyperbole-adjacent adjectives anytime now, so I'll say no more other than I AM SO GLAD I DECIDED TO CATCH UP. And now, of course, having to wait for new eps to air will be torture. But oh so delish.

LOVE, LOVE, ALL THE LOVE.
