My week of Hobbit madness

Aaaaaah. I KNOW, I KNOW, LATE LATE LATE. It kind of sucks that I didn't get the chance to write this all up a couple weeks ago when it was completely fresh in my mind, but between visitors and work and crazy commuting, there just hasn't been any time.

Anyway, better late than never! I'd decided a while ago that even if there was no way I could shag, bribe, threaten or otherwise cheat my way into receiving an invite to the world premiere of The Hobbit on November 28 (really, and here I thought I was famous *snort*), nor, alternatively, pay for one (tickets went for $2000 each, apparently - youch), I was still going to be in Wellington that week, come hell or high water, and soak in as much Hobbitsphere as I possibly could.

The timing worked out well since the lovely [info]alsha and I had tickets to see Avenue Q in Palmerston North that week anyway, so I just extended my stay to make sure I'd be in Welly on premiere day.

A note on picspam: Some of the photos are a little too wide for my IJ layout but this post has already taken way longer than it should and I am not resizing the damn things now, lol. If you want to see the pics properly, look at them while on the "leave a comment" screen!

Pre-premiere excitement )

Hobbit Fair, public screenings, LotR love, with a smidge of hypothermia plot )

Red carpet stalkage! (here there be picspam) )

And I think that's pretty much it! I have more pics but they're all variations on the ones I've posted here. It was a fabulous day, the atmosphere was great, everyone was lovely beyond belief, and I'm pleased as pie that we got to go, that we got such a good spot, and that everything worked out so beautifully. The city went all out for the entire week and being able to be a part of it just about made me explode with fangirly joy. Now all that's left to do is ACTUALLY WATCH THE DAMN MOVIE, which we're doing this Sunday (in 3D, because 3D means Richard Armitage will reach out of the screen and snog me, Y/Y? /science). I CAN'T WAIT.

And if you've made it through this massive post, you deserve a cookie, or at least some Lembas bread:

Fancast/pimping: The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan

So far, 2012 has been an excellent year for new fandom discoveries. Between Revenge and The Middleman and Teen Wolf, I already don't even know which way to swoon first, and that's not even taking into account all the great books.

So here's another book rec, because I am seriously bursting with love and I need to share: The Demon's Lexicon is a young-adult urban fantasy trilogy by Sarah Rees Brennan, whom some of you may remember from her Harry Potter fanfic days and the epic win of "Underwater Light", and whom the rest of you need to start reading, like, NOW.

The trilogy consists of three books: The Demon's Lexicon, The Demon's Covenant and The Demon's Surrender. I read the first one years ago when it came out and wasn't that impressed; then I reread it this year and fell violently in love. Go figure.

I suck at plot summaries, so here's what the blurb for the first book has to say about the premise:

"Sixteen-year-old Nick knows that demons are real. Magicians call up demons in exchange for their power. The demons can appear in any shape, show you marvels, promise you anything - until you invite them in and receive their mark.

What happens next?
First you get possessed.
Then you die.

Nick's been on the run his whole life, ever since his mother stole a charm from the most feared magician of them all, and the only person he trusts is his brother Alan. Alan's just been marked by a demon. Only Nick can save him, but to do so he must face the magicians - and kill them. The hunt is on, and Nick's going to discover things he never dreamed were out there."

So yeah. There's lots of drama and darkness and violence and running from things and running after things. Lots of saving each other's lives, and also risking each other's lives. And of course there has to be time for snarky one-liners while doing either. And for hitting on people. Or rejecting people. Or becoming friends with people you really, really didn't plan on being friends with.

On my personal scale of awesomeness, which measures everything in this particular genre against Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I should find a name for that - the Buffy Meter?), this gets about 90%. The writing is smart and fun. There's snarky dialogue and a clever sense of humour ("My life was going to flash before my eyes, but it decided to hide behind my eyes and quake with terror instead."). There's heartbreak. There are clever twists and the pacing is great. When Nick and Alan are forced to team up with another marked boy and his sister - who is as determined to save her brother as Nick is to save his - the obligatory teenage love tangles ensue, but there are no cliché turns here. This story does one of my favourite things really well: reversal of stereotype. The women are smart and strong and nobody is annoyingly perfect - on the contrary, everyone is fucked up in the most delicious ways, lol. There's a strong focus on unconventional friendships and family ties, especially sibling relationships, complete with twisted loyalties and betrayal and agonies of all sort. It is fabulous.

Above all, it has well-crafted, compelling characters. That are insanely shippy. I love every single one of them so much that I can't even pick a favourite, so instead, I've done a fancast and am just going to throw all of them at you. With the proviso that if/when you read the books, you are grudgingly allowed to imagine them completely differently ;) And if you're very keen on not being exposed to someone else's physical idea of characters, don't click on the cut or don't read on.

Thus endeth the rec.

(Basically this was my excuse to collect a bunch of pretty pictures of pretty people and flail embarrassingly about beloved characters at the same time. Everyone wins, especially me.)

((Also this is spoiler-free. I am not giving away any major plot points.))

In which I whine unattractively about yet another cancelled awesome show that I discovered too late

Bear with me while I take five to rant about the poor endorsement choices of the entertainment industry. Hey, entertainment industry? WHAT, WHAT, WHAT ARE YOU DOING. LOOK AT YOUR LIFE. LOOK AT YOUR CHOICES.

I just finished watching The Middleman. All measly 12 episodes of it. I tried to savour it, I tried to stretch it out, I kept telling myself I had to be prepared for the inevitable cruel, cancellation-based, far too premature ending.

You guys, I WAS NOT PREPARED. Why do I live in a world where Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Bridezillas are A Thing while shows like this get cancelled?? Can I go live in the parallel universe where Firefly is in its 12th season, The Middleman is just about to start season 5, any show with a Mary Sue heroine never even makes it to pre-production, and crime procedurals are the fringe genre with a mere handful of options? Please? I don't care if it's an otherwise post-apocalyptic and evil-adjacent parallel universe, as long as it Makes Good Art.

Seriously, what the fuck. This show is so good. It's funny, it's cracky, it's occasionally endearing and earnest, it makes fun of itself, it's full of geeky charm. It's smart and choc-a-bloc with goofball dialogue and witty pop culture references. It's like Firefly's crackier, artschool-attending, smartass little sister. I know I should be happy there ARE the 12 eps at least, but IT'S NOT ENOUGH AND I WANT MORE.

Raaaaaaa.

Ok, I'm better now. Well, not really. I guess I'll just go watch that live reading the cast did of the unproduced 13th ep at Comic Con (go cast! you rock!), then start buying comics and fume a lot about why I have to watch live readings of unproduced episodes and buy comics instead of watching the Big Damn Show On DVD.

Thanks for the rec, [info]lilithilien. I'll be whining at you a lot next time I see you. PREPARE.

Hunger Games, Spazzy Thoughts

*keyboardspazzes*

HOW IS THIS FILM SO GOOD, PEOPLE!

Ok, so I missed the midnight viewing because The Capitol wouldn't let me in, i.e. Wellington Airport thought it was necessary to close down for a ridic little bit of fog. I was crushed, CRUSHED. On the upside, when I flew in the next morning, [info]alshaworld and I had an awesome breakfast and then went to see the 11am show, which was nearly empty for some reason. It was really weird (but then it was a school day and still opening day so maybe not many people knew it was on that early, but still, WEIRD). We were pretty pleased to have the theatre to ourselves though :D

And it was so awesome that we decided to go again the next day, again at 11am, when suddenly there were terrifying hordes of squealing teenage girls. I was determined that if they were going to be making ANY noise during the film, I'd make them fight to the death, but to their credit, they contained the porpoise noises to before and after.

Okay, and now for some fangirly rambling! )

I... can't even think of anything else to nitpick about. So. Much. Love! I definitely need a reread, and also to see this film again approximately fifteen times. And also for all the actors and the director and crew to cancel all their other commitments and to work on catching Fire and Mockingjay right the fuck NOW, because those waiting periods are going to be some serious torture. *grabby hands*

I'm still kind of intimidated about venturing into the fandom - I think I'll need to employ a toe-dipping approach ;) But I'm also looking forward to all the awesome creativity that awaits. \o/

THIS IS A POST THAT DOES NOT CONSIST OF FIC.

However, it doesn't consist of anything else either because I've just spent an estimated 5 hours catching up on comments and the Very Meaningful Updatey Update I meant to write is clearly not going to be happening.

Instead, consider this a placeholder and a vague promise that I will attempt to be less of a slacker in my IJ/LJ habits and, y'know, keep people in the loop about My Very Exciting Life. (I KNOW. START HOLDING YOUR BREATH NOW.)

In lieu of actual news, HAPPY NEW YEAR to all you very fine people! And because it's not like this vid has been posted in a million places yet, let's have it again: Proof that the past two years were made of magic, that Ulrike Röseberg is made of complete win, and that Dennis Grabosch rocks too hard for words:

GOOL-y Goodies: Aldi's Verbose Trip Report of Doom (With Extra Sap, Yuck)

So, that wee event thing that's been eating mine and [info]lilithilien's lives for the past months... happened. Without major catastrophe. Which still confuses my pessimistic little heart no end: "What? Things went shiny? People were happy? Had a good time? No one got throttled, abducted, lost, or otherwise abused? REALLY?"

Really. Minor hiccoughs aside, the weekend was ****ING AWESOME (yeah, sorry, NHLB-ers. I stalked your sekrit chatroom and witnessed the happening of your sekrit in-jokes ;)), unforgettable, ecstatic, blurry with fabulousity.

I've been nabbing photos from everyone left, right, and centre since I got back, since I didn't bring my own camera, so I think it'd be rather pointless to repost other people's pics, lol. (Well, maybe one. Or two. That I really really liked.) I shall focus on rambling instead. BECAUSE I CAN RAMBLE, Y/Y!

Bring snacks. And water. And possibly a potty. Here there be babbling. )

(Now I'm home and believe it or not, I STILL have leftover condoms and lube. And I really am the last person to need them. *makes water balloons*)

OMG YOU GUYS

I WAS UP UNTIL 4 AM AND WHEN I LEFT, MY INBOX WAS EMPTY. NOW THERE ARE 42 NEW MESSAGES AND APPARENTLY SOME KIND OF EXPLOSION TOOK PLACE IN THE POST BELOW. I AM SCARED TO GO LOOK JUST YET BUT I JUST WANTED TO TELL YOU THAT I LOVE YOU, YOU INSANE PEOPLE, YOU.

LOLOLOLOLOL.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LIL!!!

*pounces and snogs*

OMG what a crazy year it's been. If a year ago I'd told you about ANY of the stuff that was going to happen, you would've laughed and patted me on the head and been on your merry *G*

LIL, A YEAR AGO YOU HADN'T EVEN EMBRACED CAPSLOCK. LOLOLOL.

Not what I meant, I know. But still. CRAZYSKATES.

I see I'm late to the party and there are already piles of fabulously sparkly gifts (WHICH, OMG LOL!!!!) but I just want to tell you that you are amazing and I love you so much it's nuts. *squishy soppy hugs* You're one of the fabulousest people in my life EVER and I don't even know what I did when all I had was a full brain instead of a third of one. I can't wait to see you again IN A FEW WEEKS OMGYAY!!!!

Due to recent craziness and me having forgotten how to make extra hours appear in my days *sadfaces* it looks like my birthday present is unfortunately going to be a bit late *ducks in shame* However, to whet your appetite a bit, I can tell you that it involves...

cracky pictorial morsels )

For now, have lots and lots of snuggles, snogs, and more cake:

"So what the hell is this? German soap? WTF?"

Okay, so I am really restraining myself and trying to be good and not making my only LJ/IJ/DW posts about OMG NOT THE BLOODY SOAP AGAIN AND GAH THERE SHE GOES AGAIN WITH THE VIDSPAM, but sorry, I am incapable of not spreading the joy of this.

[info]shellykitty, WHO IS SEVENTEEN MILLION KINDS OF INCREDIBLY AWESOME AND TALENTED, JUST MADE THIS SEKRIT SEKRIT PROJECT AND OMG IT IS THE BEST THING EVER AND I AM GOING TO USE IT AS MY DEFAULT ANSWER WHENEVER SOMEONE ASKS "SO WHAT'S THIS GERMAN SOAP THING?" SO I CAN SAY "WELL, DEAR FRIEND, IT IS MADE UP OF THE FOLLOWING CRACKY THINGS! ENJOY OR SHAKE YOUR HEAD AT ME, BUT I DARE YOU NOT TO GIGGLE OR AWWWWW AT LEAST ONCE. YES."

BEHOLD THE CRACKY JOY:

BRB, WATCHING THIS UNTIL THE END OF DAYS.

May. 29th, 2009

One of these days...

I swear I'm going to do an actual update. I swear I will. As per usual, it will probably start with "I AM ALIVE".

In the meantime, though, my show made my head explode today. In a good way. OMFG.

Nicht so.  )

May. 6th, 2009

My obsession, let me show you it.

I seriously need to get organised about Dreamwidth. The thing is, it does take time to actually sit down and organise stuff and time and organisational skills are things that forever elude me. Srsly, I need a personal assistant to organise my life. Or maybe a house elf. Yes. That'd do.

Mainly, I just want everyone to be in one place, lol. I'm already having trouble juggling two journals and scrambling after my fifteen hundred online bases to cover on a regular basis. *grabs people and things of interest and squishes them into same virtual space*

This week, I have been working on my fic! I've hated pretty much every word I've done on it, but hey, words were produced. I think I realised about three quarters of the way through that I have too much boggy detail and that this probably didn't need to be its own chapter, but dammit, I have 10,000 words, I have sweated several bucketfuls of blood to get them, and I am not tossing them, so hah.

It doesn't help when instead of sucking and inspiring me to fix it (as usual), my show is actually being awesome right now. [info]lilithilien and [info]sdk have been busy little beavers subbing recent episodes at Eskimo Kiss Project to have something to counter-balance the suckage of the older ones (DeVa era, joy), and lo and behold, some of the recent ones have been more than watchable. They have actually been good. Like, really really good. This boggles my mind:

MY LIFE IN CAPSLOCK

Wow, what is this place? It looks vaguely familiar. It has like, icons and stuff! Curious. *pokes*

Well, I am caught up with my f-list. Kinda. Maybe. My inbox is a different matter entirely. EMAILS? WHAT ARE THOSE? And if work ever remembers that I exist, I'm in trouble, lol. WHERE IS MY RICH AUNT WHO WANTS TO BEQUEATHE HER SUBSTANTIAL FORTUNE TO ME, WHERE, WHERE?

It's getting into autumn here, but like last year it's mostly warm and the leaves are just starting to turn and be all gorgeous. Some hiking definitely needs to happen this autumn, preferably when the lovely [info]feruche comes to visit in less than a month! Squeeeeeeeee! I CAN'T WAIT. Last weekend [info]alsha and i went on a wee roadtrip to have a picnic/frisbee-playing/reading afternoon out in the hills. It was unfortunately cut short by interfering gnats, but fun anyway! I keep taking it for granted what an awesome place I live in.

Then last night we went out and discovered a super-cute pub that we definitely need to frequent more. Their berry cider was out of this world, and we played pink scrabble. Much fun was had!

I was reminded the other day that HBP is coming out soon. Dude. That movie has slipped so far to the back of my mind. I mean, I'm still gonna go see it, but I'm not anywhere near as excited as I would have been back in November. I maintain that moving it back that far was an epically stupid decision.

In fandom news, MY LIFE IS MADNESS.

*puts behind cut to spare poor f-list that has had it up to here with hearing about German soaps* )

That's it for now, I think. Apologies for being sporadic and/or one-track-minded. One of these years I'll talk about something else, I'm sure. SURE OF IT.

I hope everyone's having a great weekend! *smooches f-list*

Apr. 12th, 2009

The Longest Day

Oh wow, this week was utter, blissful madness. The lovely [info]sdk and I essentially ignored the rest of the world and went to live in Eskimo Kiss Land around the clock. We basically stayed up four days in a row (slept two hours out of each, hahahaa), CAPSLOCKED at each other 24/7 and uploaded a stupendously huge shitload of vids. We've got less than 30 left to go on the old timeline now and then we can join it all up and zoom ahead on the new one! It was so much fun I can't even begin to tell you.

In fact, our week was pretty much this:

Yes. That's exactly what it was like. Gay sparkly insane fantasy land = home. Muahahahaha.

Among other things, we got up one vid that I'm particularly proud of, because it showcases the awesomeness of Ulrike Röseberg and André Dietz (contains spoilers for current eps):

(the screenshot & caption happen to be pretty damn perfect too!)

Sometimes I am just floored about the massive amounts of fun everyone on that set seems to have. I mean, I'm sure there are plenty of sucky days too, but you can see that they mostly get on swimmingly and have such a great rapport, and it really adds extra depth to the show. Granted, I don't find the show currently terribly interesting, but they so completely lucked out with their cast. I'll even watch shite plots just to see some of these people act. I love my very messy fandom.

Shelly and I also worked on a bunch of other awesome things and went completely crazy. And I'm not talking normal people crazy. I'm talking utterly batshit insane. Small children would have been whisked to safety, so I guess it's a good thing there weren't any around. It was glorious.

Also, because we have so much time on our hands (and because I very rudely stole all the subtitling), Shelly randomly went and learned video editing, AHAHAHAHAH. YES. Like, in a day. HER MAD SKILLZ TERRIFY AND DELIGHT ME.

And so, within a day, she's made this glorious thing:

It's a belated birthday present for Lil and a companion vid to her beautiful ficlet Wahr, which is still my favourite Roman character study ever and so gorgeous it hurts. And Shelly's vid captures that mood so beautifully... plus, SO MUCH PRETTY SKATING, OMG! (I found some of it, wheeee!)

So yes, that was my week, lol. Things have been NUTS and I am so out of the loop on everything else. I just continue to be amazed at how well the three of us work together and how hugely rewarding and fun this project is. It's fabulous to see people get invested, and we get a bunch of lovely appreciative comments and messages (in addition to a whole tonne of YT's usual ilk of "HAI THERE, I HAVE NO BRAIN", lol) that are a joy to read, and we treasure that...but the thing is that we're doing it first and foremost because we enjoy it so damn much. I love that to a truly silly degree.

I've slept normal hours this weekend, and my body does not like it. It's all confused and groggy and wants to go back to its nice pattern of 2-4 hours. One of these days I will eliminate the necessity of sleep entirely, I swear it!

I also haven't had time to watch the show this week, so I just raced through the four newest eps today. They were largely boring and there's no way I'm doing in-depth recaps, but I'll probably throw up a quick summary or something. And I need to work on my fic, OMG.
