Angsty gladiators ate my life.

I'm trying to make a semi-conscious effort to not just post every random thing that happens exclusively on Twitter. It's so addictive and easy and I do truly love it (well, caveat: the way I use Twitter is basically just like a private chat room, lol), but it's in the nature of the beast that things slide very quickly way down your feed and out of your mind. One of the things I've always loved (and lately missed) about the IJ/LJ experience is how easy it is to take a stroll down memory lane and cheer yourself up with some sparkly old thing when you're having a shit day. Well, provided you keep decently organised tags, which I really, really don't, lol. But I am trying to revive it a bit and get back into the habit of semi-regular posting. (It helps when you upload approximately seven gazillion new icons so you actually want to post just so you can use them.)

Right, so, I'm still stuck way hard on Spartacus. Poking at fic, bemusedly wading through Tumblr, meta-spazzing at [info]alsha and anyone else who will listen. It's pretty damn awesome. I've missed the days of only sleeping 4 hours a night because you're too busy tearing your hair out over some scene that won't come right or spending a ridiculous amount of time on researching crucifixion injuries (I have to say, Vikings really dropped the ball on this one, with Athelstan's unceremonious full recovery, lol).

Anyway, just taking a break to trawl more cast tribute vids. Unlike show-based fanvids, with these, I don't really give two shits about quality, I'm perfectly happy just ogling the unfairly gorgeous shiny people. (And vaguely regretting that Liam got to do humour on the show so rarely, because he is so freaking funny!)

Also? Lining up the We won't break, we won't die, it's just a moment of change" part of these lyrics with Andy footage is FUCKING EVIL. Arrrgh :CCCC

Shiny Spartacus fanvids *paws*

I'll put this out there first: I'm annoyingly picky about fanvids. I don't like talking heads. I don't like random kiss compilations with no actual story, set to a slow-mo ballad that has nothing to do with a character or pairing. I don't like heaps of text in fancy fonts or heaps of dialogue sprinkled throughout a vid. Basically I'm predestined to not like about 95% of all the fanvids ever. For this, I blame the people who have introduced me to fanvidding - all of whom were people with very high standards of vidding, who knew their shit, not just in terms of tech, but also in terms of what looks and sounds good, how pacing works, what engages the viewer emotionally, what puts a new spin on a storyline or pairing. CURSE YOU FOR MAKING ME PICKY, VIDDING FRIENDS. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE :p

So, ever since I fell head over heels with Spartacus, I've been wading through fanvids when I have time, with somewhat predictable results. There are a LOT of kissing and fight scene compilations out there, lol. There are a lot of talking heads and slow-mo ballads. Shockingly, there are a LOT of variations on "This Is War." (Not really judging here, actually - liking kissing and fight scene compilations is fine and I like This Is War as a song. I'm also too lazy to learn vidding but I know from watching others do it that it's an incredible amount of work. So, y'know, people should make what vids they want to make, obviously).

Anyway, I wanted to share a few Spartacus vids that I genuinely loved, and ramble about why. Let's go!

1. Time of Our Lives - Spartacus tribute by Zurik 23M

Time of Our Lives

This is my favourite Spartacus tribute vid ever. I love the song choice. I love how it spans all the seasons; how it gives equal focus to Andy's and Liam's Spartacus; how its main focus is on friendship and loss (ALL THOSE FUCKING ARM CLASPS! Y U NO HUG, GUYS!). I think it perfectly captures what the show is about, and it's incredibly moving. After I finished with the show the first time, I looped this an embarrassing amount of times.

2. "This love that I've found, I detest" - Spartacus/Ilithyia by ItsTheWonderfulAmy

This Love That I've Found, I Detest

I ship the crap out of these two and their glorious hatred, ngl. In general I think this show is pretty much perfect but there are a few things I wish it had had more time for, and one of those things is Ilithyia. I think she had more story left to tell. I liked Laeta and eventually got on board with her and Sparty's thing in s3, but not-so-secretly I always wished Ilithyia had lived and they'd delved more deeply into this fucked-up relationship and she and Spartacus could have had.

Enter this vid, which I think is just perfect. Firstly: Mumford & Sons! Can't really ever go wrong with that. Secondly: the editing is fantastic. I love how it actually tells a story that's different from what we see on-screen, rather than just compiling scenes we've seen. This creates new context, new emotions, and new character nuances, especially for Ilithyia. That's exactly the kind of vidding that I admire hugely: the kind that takes existing footage and creates something new out of it. Also, the colour filters are beautiful.

3. "I'm ready for you now" - Agron/Nasir by Mary_Bell

I'm Ready For You Now

OK, so this has dialogue lines at the very beginning, not to mention Nasir's name spelled wrong, lol. However, apart from that, I love it. I think the two big things that sell it are the pacing and the song choice. The cuts are fast and dynamic, which works great for this pairing (their lives are fast-paced, and their decisions - both rational and emotional - often spur-of-the-moment). There's a lovely balance of their beginnings and their later moments (yay for a smidge of Castus!!), and I think the song works really well, especially for Agron. He's such an utter scrambled mess after losing Duro, he's the kind of guy who just really needs to be somebody's everything (whether that somebody is a brother or a lover), and the whole "don't want to fight alone" thing is just him to a T. And I think the part about "Bring me out / Come and find me in the dark now" also resonates really well with what Nasir does for him. Basically, FEELS, is what I'm saying here.

4. Random cast appreciation vid because reasons.

Cast Tribute

Aaaand this is where I throw editing/vidding preferences out the window and just bask in how sparkly and lovely this cast is and how I adore them all madly :D

(PS: Does anyone know how embedding YT vids on IJ works these days?? YT has disabled the old embed code, and the iframe one still doesn't seem to work on IJ. Annoy! ETA: Solved! This handy tool will convert it.)

Musicals, Musicals, Musicals

Certain people who I shall not name have been bombarding me with a staccato of Elisabeth clips lately, and I'm currently in the process of subtitling another one of my all-time favourite German musicals, so it's no surprise that the world of musicals has been on my mind in general.

So in my ongoing quest to reclaim meme-ing from tumblr, have a 30 Days of Musicals meme:

In love with musical - Songs, performers, productions, costumes, and roughly 70,000 YouTube clips )

30 Days of Firefly (or possibly 30 Days of the Tam Siblings Appreciation Society)

First of all, yes, I am on a "30 Days of [Insert Show]" spree, lol. Second of all, I was saddened to see that this was only on Tumblr and Facebook (when did those become the primary fandom interaction spaces? :CCC) and decided that needed to be remedied immediately. Third of all, I tweaked some of the questions because they were stupid. Fourth of all, let's go!

Dear diary: Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy. Today we were kidnapped by hill folk, never to be seen again. It was the best day ever. )

Oh YT, you are full of gems

This will probably only make sense if you know that Old Spice commercial. You know, That One. And/or if your mind is very warped.

Oh Merlin and your faded sparkle of yore. Stop trying to make these little forays of charm in my general direction. I know we loved each other madly for a little while, but it's time you faced up to the fact that that's ALL IN THE PAST. You don't deserve my attention anymore. I should be with a pretty show my own age who won't cheat on me by betraying its own subtext. *does a quick Google for shows first airing in 1978* Right, that apparently means Aldi/Original Battlestar Galactica = OTP. The things you learn.

Jun. 26th, 2010

Well, ow.

The lovely evil [info]alsha reminded me of this.

Jun. 24th, 2010

Oh fandom. The things I do to you.

Okay. I feel I need to eeeeeeeaaaaaase you guys into this.

NO NO NO, I AM NOT RECCING ANY HORRIFIC BADFIC, I PROMISE!!! HONEST! )

There. I said it. Wheeeeeeeeeee!

"So what the hell is this? German soap? WTF?"

Okay, so I am really restraining myself and trying to be good and not making my only LJ/IJ/DW posts about OMG NOT THE BLOODY SOAP AGAIN AND GAH THERE SHE GOES AGAIN WITH THE VIDSPAM, but sorry, I am incapable of not spreading the joy of this.

[info]shellykitty, WHO IS SEVENTEEN MILLION KINDS OF INCREDIBLY AWESOME AND TALENTED, JUST MADE THIS SEKRIT SEKRIT PROJECT AND OMG IT IS THE BEST THING EVER AND I AM GOING TO USE IT AS MY DEFAULT ANSWER WHENEVER SOMEONE ASKS "SO WHAT'S THIS GERMAN SOAP THING?" SO I CAN SAY "WELL, DEAR FRIEND, IT IS MADE UP OF THE FOLLOWING CRACKY THINGS! ENJOY OR SHAKE YOUR HEAD AT ME, BUT I DARE YOU NOT TO GIGGLE OR AWWWWW AT LEAST ONCE. YES."

BEHOLD THE CRACKY JOY:

BRB, WATCHING THIS UNTIL THE END OF DAYS.

Winter, What Winter?, Telly-Watching, & the Latest from Cracky Sparkly Obsession Land

*pokes in head, does perfunctory cleaning, feeds the starved dustbunnies*

I biked to town today! I thought it might just about kill me, but actually it was really fun, and I did not even crumble before the Hill of Hell (living in a town that's all built on hills is very pretty until you have to manouevre them on a bike). We'll see if my thighs will turn to knotted wood overnight, but I was pleasantly surprised.

This winter has been insanely mild. Like... it's laughable to even call it winter. We don't get snow, but last year it was pretty cold and we had that killer storm that sent like 500 trees flying through the air and smashing into things. This year has mostly been sunny and slightly cool, lol. It's hardly ever rained. It hasn't stormed. The temperature's rarely even dropped to zero. And now it's not even mid-August but it's been so warm and spring-like that I was hot in my long-sleeved shirt (no jacket) today. Crazyskates! Not that I'm complaining. Grandma asks if we don't miss the snow everytime we talk, and I can still respond with an emphatic "NO!", lol.

Otherwise, not much new is going on. I'm still busy bending the time/space continuum, getting by on 10 hours of sleep a week, and being a busy little bee on EKP and the awesomesauce that is AWZ lately. The lovely [info]alsha and I are watching One Tree Hill, which I am notable unimpressed with so far, and she's recently got me hooked on Sugar Rush, which is just all sorts of adorable and hilarious, with just the right amount of snark. Plus, lots of lovely girlslash! What's not to love?

Being so wrapped up in my cracky German soap and watching lots of British shows lately has really kind of put me off mainstream American shows, I think, lol. We started watching One Tree Hill because we both quite like cheesy teenage shows to veg with (witness my terrible cheerful love for Dawson's Creek) but ugh... everything so far has been so ham-fisted and anvil-dropping and eyerollingly moralising and glossy and wooden. Pls to be giving me some characters that are actual people instead of walking stereotypes. And some good writing would help, too.

Anyway, life's pretty good. Could do with less job and more money, a clone or seven, and more hours in my day, as usual, but in general, can't complain.

Bunch of fandom stuff behind cut to spare the non-obsessed )

And now... I have ice cream, gummis and, uhm, work. Rats. Why must one work, why, why? I wish to spend all my time doing shiny things! *pouty*

As ever, I do read the f-list even if I don't post much lately. Love you all! Hope you're having great weekends! *smooches*

*dips toe out of monogamous fannish obsession*

Ok, the lovely [info]alsha and I are off to watch HBP and then I can finally read all those spoilers that've been driving me... ok, largely indifferent, lol. But I still want to read them!

Now. How to get into a HP frame of mind within half an hour? Somehow I must achieve this feat. Otherwise I'm just going to sit there loudly wondering why nobody's skating and why Voldemort isn't played by Henning Heup:

And making audible EYEFLASH WHOOSH WHOOSH noises. And then I'll be killed by other cinema goers and my tiny fandom will cry (or I tell myself that it will, anyway).

Seriously, the huge disservice these morons did themselves by pushing this movie back so far? GAH. Half a year ago I was psyched out of my head for this. Now I feel like I've been going out with this movie for ages and for some lame reason we decided to hold off on the sex long past the point where it made sense, so now we've just reached this point where we're going, "Okay, fine, that special moment will not come. Let's just do it and get it over with," and then it'll be awkward and weird and we'll end up breaking up a week later, feeling vaguely cheated of the last half year of our lives when we could've been having lots of awesome sex with other people movies, and I think that metaphor has been streched quite long enough now, as has this sentence, so OKAY, OFF TO THE CINEMA! CONVINCE ME OF YOUR AWESOME PROWESS THAT WAS TOTES WORTH WAITING FOR, HBP!

Christina Stürmer, ILU

Okay, I have a music crush. This happens rarely enough that it merits a post.

Initially, Christina Stürmer was just the chick who's doing the theme song for this cracky show I may be a little obsessed with. Then I randomly looked for more of her music, and it turns out I am actually madly in love with her. She even beats my other girlcrush of the year, Merlin's Katie McGrath, by a hair's breadth, by the simple virtue of being able to sing. I adore her slightly smoky voice and the way she seems to overdo it just a tiny bit too much at concerts, like she feels she has to give this somewhat larger than life impression of herself, when she's actually pretty damn perfect the way she is, so she ends up looking like a bit of a dork. I LOVE DORKS.

I am also in love with her piercings and her casual khaki wear and her slightly slouchy shoulders and her self-mockery when she does her Austrian accent. OMG Christina. Never change, okay?

May. 6th, 2009

My obsession, let me show you it.

I seriously need to get organised about Dreamwidth. The thing is, it does take time to actually sit down and organise stuff and time and organisational skills are things that forever elude me. Srsly, I need a personal assistant to organise my life. Or maybe a house elf. Yes. That'd do.

Mainly, I just want everyone to be in one place, lol. I'm already having trouble juggling two journals and scrambling after my fifteen hundred online bases to cover on a regular basis. *grabs people and things of interest and squishes them into same virtual space*

This week, I have been working on my fic! I've hated pretty much every word I've done on it, but hey, words were produced. I think I realised about three quarters of the way through that I have too much boggy detail and that this probably didn't need to be its own chapter, but dammit, I have 10,000 words, I have sweated several bucketfuls of blood to get them, and I am not tossing them, so hah.

It doesn't help when instead of sucking and inspiring me to fix it (as usual), my show is actually being awesome right now. [info]lilithilien and [info]sdk have been busy little beavers subbing recent episodes at Eskimo Kiss Project to have something to counter-balance the suckage of the older ones (DeVa era, joy), and lo and behold, some of the recent ones have been more than watchable. They have actually been good. Like, really really good. This boggles my mind:

Spazzing flail )

The Longest Day

Oh wow, this week was utter, blissful madness. The lovely [info]sdk and I essentially ignored the rest of the world and went to live in Eskimo Kiss Land around the clock. We basically stayed up four days in a row (slept two hours out of each, hahahaa), CAPSLOCKED at each other 24/7 and uploaded a stupendously huge shitload of vids. We've got less than 30 left to go on the old timeline now and then we can join it all up and zoom ahead on the new one! It was so much fun I can't even begin to tell you.

In fact, our week was pretty much this:

Yes. That's exactly what it was like. Gay sparkly insane fantasy land = home. Muahahahaha.

Among other things, we got up one vid that I'm particularly proud of, because it showcases the awesomeness of Ulrike Röseberg and André Dietz (contains spoilers for current eps):

(the screenshot & caption happen to be pretty damn perfect too!)

Sometimes I am just floored about the massive amounts of fun everyone on that set seems to have. I mean, I'm sure there are plenty of sucky days too, but you can see that they mostly get on swimmingly and have such a great rapport, and it really adds extra depth to the show. Granted, I don't find the show currently terribly interesting, but they so completely lucked out with their cast. I'll even watch shite plots just to see some of these people act. I love my very messy fandom.

Shelly and I also worked on a bunch of other awesome things and went completely crazy. And I'm not talking normal people crazy. I'm talking utterly batshit insane. Small children would have been whisked to safety, so I guess it's a good thing there weren't any around. It was glorious.

Also, because we have so much time on our hands (and because I very rudely stole all the subtitling), Shelly randomly went and learned video editing, AHAHAHAHAH. YES. Like, in a day. HER MAD SKILLZ TERRIFY AND DELIGHT ME.

And so, within a day, she's made this glorious thing:

It's a belated birthday present for Lil and a companion vid to her beautiful ficlet Wahr, which is still my favourite Roman character study ever and so gorgeous it hurts. And Shelly's vid captures that mood so beautifully... plus, SO MUCH PRETTY SKATING, OMG! (I found some of it, wheeee!)

So yes, that was my week, lol. Things have been NUTS and I am so out of the loop on everything else. I just continue to be amazed at how well the three of us work together and how hugely rewarding and fun this project is. It's fabulous to see people get invested, and we get a bunch of lovely appreciative comments and messages (in addition to a whole tonne of YT's usual ilk of "HAI THERE, I HAVE NO BRAIN", lol) that are a joy to read, and we treasure that...but the thing is that we're doing it first and foremost because we enjoy it so damn much. I love that to a truly silly degree.

I've slept normal hours this weekend, and my body does not like it. It's all confused and groggy and wants to go back to its nice pattern of 2-4 hours. One of these days I will eliminate the necessity of sleep entirely, I swear it!

I also haven't had time to watch the show this week, so I just raced through the four newest eps today. They were largely boring and there's no way I'm doing in-depth recaps, but I'll probably throw up a quick summary or something. And I need to work on my fic, OMG.

ALSO? I CAN KILL YOU WITH MY BRAIN.

Barring that, with my nonsensical picspam. You will all COWER.

This just went up on Eskimo Kiss Project:

I love my cracky fandom *pets it*

ETA: (although the spoilers that just went up are boggling my little head to pieces. WTH?)

Happy skating day!

The lovely [info]lilithilien, as she is prone to do, just made my entire week. Possibly my month. Not only did she grab Roman and Jenny's fantastically gorgeous skating scene from today's episode, but she went and wrote fic about it!! and it is beautiful beyond belief.

For those who care, the ficlet is spoilery (but you should read it anyway because your life will be the poorer if you don't!), the vid is not - it's just gorgeous skating. Watch, watch!

And now I've got a HUGE boost of inspiration for chapter 3 of my angst-ridden WIP, YAY!
